Heard Museum Happenings

A Summer Solstice Film Screening

When:Tuesday, June 21
Time:6:00 pm – 9:00 pm
Cost: Free
Location: Steele Auditorium

The Heard Museum’s iconic downtown Phoenix campus will host Gila River Broadcasting Corporations first feature documentary, “She Still Walks Among Us,” written and directed by Marrisa Hiosik-Johnson (Salt River) and co-directed by Cordell Parker (Gila River Broadcasting Corporation).

The Heard Museum, in partnership with the Salt River Pima-Maricopa Indian Community and in honor of the late tribal member and retired firefighter Royce Manuel (Akimel Aw-thum), presents this important film exploring the art of constructing a Kia-ha, or “Burden Basket.” The “Burden Basket” was once a very practical – yet spiritual – basket woven by men and carried by women to transport everyday materials, food, and goods for trade.

Catch the premiere also on over-the-air Channel 29.1 within the Gila River Indian Community.
Film followed by a panel discussion featuring: Director, Marissa Hiosik-Johnson, student, and burden basket maker – Matthew Yatsayte, and Jacob Butler, Chair of the board for Native Seed Search based in Tucson. You won’t want to miss this fascinating exploration of a Southwest Indigenous tradition.
